ROle Models in Sport

I spoke to Kathy Donaghy with the Irish Independent about what it takes to become an elite athlete. We talked about perceptual cognitive skills, personal development and the sacrifices it takes to get to the top level in sport and to stay there. We also spoke about the importance of sports role models for children and young people. Role models can provide confidence to young athletes that they can achieve their dreams as well as helping to keep them in sport. Research has also shown that when teenage girls are asked to name a role model only a small percentage choose someone from sport so increased exposure to female sports role models is important.

The SUNDAY TIMES- Extreme Sport Participation

In August 2023, Dr Quinn spoke to Erin McCafferty from The Sunday Times about extreme sport participation. They chatted about what motivates athletes to compete in extreme sports and how to manage risk in sport. Interest in traditional sports is on the decline while interest in extreme sports is on the rise. Athletes who participate in extreme sports experience a range of positive emotions, resilience, increased courage as well as humility and calmness. Extreme sports also facilitate the development of skills and physical capacities that help us to thrive in all areas of our lives. Afterall if you can conquer Everest there’s not much else you’re going to feel you can’t do. Extreme sports can provide meaning for participants and are also used as therapeutic interventions to address a variety of psychological issues including drug abuse. Competition is often not emphasized in extreme sports. Engaging in extreme sports and adventure more generally provides us with important insights into what it means to be human. Certain events that bring us nearer to the reality of our own deaths are positive life-changing experiences.

" Like all sports there are physical and mental benefits. In addition there's the social aspect, which allows you to connect with other like-minded people who have similar values and interests. There can be a real sense of community about these events"
